Sun Safety On The Golf Course

 

In Australia we know that sun protection is a vital part of our golf game. With almost half a million Australians each year having skin cancer treatment, protection from the sun is important.

Below are some tips to stay sun safe while playing Golf.

 

Umbrellas

Umbrellas are great when there is rain on the horizon. As we know we should never set out on a golf course without an umbrella. The umbrella on your golf buggy should be in use in nearly all your games of golf (wind permitting). For there is one thing that may be more hazardous than rain and hail. The sun.  Sun burn and dehydration can be hazardous.

Invest in a buggy that has an umbrella holder and purchase a good quality umbrella. The silver reflection umbrella’s help keep you cool  in the summer.

Hats, full brim

Wearing a hat or cap is important. Some golfers wear visors but your scalp can get sunburnt under your hair so be aware.

The best option would be a full brim hat.

 

UV Sleeves

You may have noticed UV Sleeves being warn around the Golf course. These are worn under your shirt and run from the top of your upper arm to your wrist. The compression is very light and they do no resemble other types of exercise compression garments.

These UV Sleeves allow a player to feel the comfort of a short sleeve shirt but gain the benefits of a long sleeve shirt. The UV sleeve negates a golfer wearing sun cream on their arms.

There are a few brands that make UV Sleeves. Be sure that the brand you choose is UV certified by a reliable authority.

Sun Cream

Sun cream should be applied every day, regardless if you are playing golf or not.

On a golf day one should apply before the game and at the half way. At least an SPF 30+ level sun cream should be used but 50+ is ideal.

Zinc is also a very good option. Clear and skin toned zinc are popular, especially on your face and hands.
